  1. I have the orange brake warning light on my dashboard and I am struggling to find out why. A couple of weeks ago I changed the rear pads and discs and the fronts were done 2 months ago so they are all OK. I have checked the brake fluid level and it is on Max and I have linked out both the front pad wear sensors, the 1 wear on the rear and the reservoir but the light stays on. I am guessing I must have a wiring fault but how do I narrow it down? Is there a way to check why the light is on? Can vag.com help me here? Cheers all.
  2. Mine was pouring brake fluid out of the seal so I changed it rather than mess with it. Sparky Paul was right, the calipers are the same so no worries and cheaper.
  3. The drivers side rear caliper has failed on our 2001 (new shape) Galaxy. My local breaker has a 1998 (old shape) Galaxy and I need to know if the calipers are the same or did they get changed when the Galaxy got updated? Cheers Catherine
  4. Car is a 2001 facelift with 1.9 TDi (AUY) engine. We have had a accident in the car that has deployed the Drivers side air bag. I can get the air bag and the sensor underneath the seat from a local breakers, will I need anything else? Does the side air bag deployment kill the air bag ECU? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  5. Thanks for the reply. I am just cranking it without the glow plugs in. I did it originally to prime the new turbo with oil before I started it, that is when I got the low oil pressure light and obviously I don't want to fit the glow plugs and start an engine with an oil pressure problem. I have one pressure switch on the filter housing.
  6. I took the sump off the morning, the strainer was almost perfectly clean and the sump had no gunk in the bottom. I did find a few tiny bits of metal in the sump but they were nothing that was concerning. Now I cleaned out the oil filter housing with a syringe and wiped out the sump so there was nothing left. When I topped her up with 4 litres of oil it went to Max. 15 seconds of cranking later I got the low oil pressure warning again but the oil is now down the Min, clearly there is some circulation of the oil to the top end. I topped her up again and tried a few more times with no success. Normally I would just replace the glow plugs, start the car, see how she sounds at idle and see if the oil pressure is OK with her running. However I am worried about the new Turbo being dry so I am not happy doing this. If I loosen the turbo oil return pipe and I get oil then I know I have at least got some oil going through it, will this mean it is safe to try and idle the engine or do you need full pressure to protect the turbo? Cheers for reading ...
  7. OK then, the sump is coming off on Saturday morning to check the state of play. I know the strainer is simple to remove (2 bolts) but where on the pump is the relief valve, any pictures/diagrams? I am guessing it is just a cap with a spring pushing a ball bearing into a seat in the pump housing, excess pressure will lift the ball bearing and allow oil back to the sump. Finally the 2 tricky bolts that you access though the gearbox housing, are they torx or allen heads and what size? I ask because I am going to buy a long reach tool rather that struggle with extension bars etc. Thanks All ...
  8. Unfortunately I haven't got a gauge but I will check the others tomorrow. Strainer is easy but where is the relief valve? Thanks for responding.
  9. About a month ago our turbo blew, it is a 2001 with engine code AUY. I was only 500 yards from home so I coasted it home with very low revs, it sounded fine and started first turn of the key the next morning. Further examination revealed a faulty turbo so I changed it. After rebuilding it I checked the oil and it was down about 1/2 a litre. This made sense as I had changed it 4 days before the turbo went and there was next to no oil in the intercooler or the pipes, anyway I topped it up to max to be sure. Because the car hadn't run for a few weeks and it had a new turbo I decided I wanted to pump the oil around before actually starting the engine so I took the glow plugs out and cranked her over. Now she sounds fine but after 5 seconds I get a low oil pressure warning on the dash and I obviously stop. I have tried it 3 or 4 times with the same result. Clearly I don't want to start the engine with low oil pressure but I am at a loss as to know why it has low oil pressure when it was idling perfectly even with the blown turbo. I have swapped the oil and filter even though they were new but that has made no difference. Any ideas ... Thanks in advance.
  10. Hi, I am in the process of changing the turbo on our 2001 115 BHP Galaxy. I haven't got a ramp so I have had to do it the hard way, inlet manifold off first and then work from the top and through the drivers wheel arch. Anyway it is off now and I have sourced replacement from a local breakers but it is different on the mount underneath the turbo. The part numbers are 713672 & 713673. The original turbo bolted sideways onto a L bracket and a spacer that was in turn bolted to the engine block, the new turbo one looks like you throw the L bracket away and bolt the new turbo directly to the engine block. Trouble is I can't get a good look at the situation and I want to check if I needed a new sized spacer, reuse the current spacer or just bolt the turbo directly to the block. I am sure it is perfectly obvious from underneath but working by feel from the top it is a little more tricky. Thanks All.
  11. Ok now I am stressed. I have just got the turbo of my 1.9 TDi 115BHP (AUY) Galaxy and found the turbo failure was far worse than I thought. The shaft has snapped and the blades on the air input side have touched the housing and broken some of them off. I have had all the intercooler pipes off and blown air though the intercooler but they are now where to be found. Perhaps at that high RPM they didn't snap but rather disintegrated into tiny parts and passed harmlessly though the combustion chamber? I will finish it tomorrow morning and try it anyway but if anyone has any input I would appreciate it........
  12. Thanks for the reply Mirez. Sadly it has got worse. The last couple of days there has been a bit of smoke on boost from cold but it stopped after 1 or 2 minutes. Today however it let go completely, when you press press the accelerator it sends out loads of white smoke and it is a little lumpy. The water is slightly below max and when you press the accelerator it drops in the bottle and rise when you lift off so it isn't pressurising the coolant system. Oil is quite clean but cap has mayo as I have said. The smoke is not blue and when I put my hand over the exhaust it doesn't get oil on it so I assume the smoke is either unburned diesel vapour or water. I think it is the HG but would welcome some advice before I split the head. One final thing that may or may not be relevant. 5 or 6 times over the last month the turbo has dropped out with an over boost error (sticking veins I guess) so I was looking to change that in the next few weeks anyway, perhaps that has let go but would that cause the symptoms and how would I tell? Many Thanks.
  13. Our Galaxy (1.9 TDi AUY) has used a little water in the last month and was down to the minimum marker. I top it up and noticed there was a 1/4 inch of mayo scum under the oil filler cap (Gulp) but no oil in the coolant header tank. It is running perfectly and there is now sign of mayo on the dipstick. I have wiped it clean and driven the car for 20 miles and the cap is still clean and no water usage. I have read the oil coolers can put oil in the water but can they go the other way? What do you guys thinks, am I at the beginnings of a HG failure and are there any checks I can do?
  14. Spot on matey, burnt to a crisp. Many many thanks
  15. Last week our Galaxy stalled while it was idling but it restarted first turn of the key so I thought nothing of it. Last night it died in the fast lane of the M5, fortunately we made the hard shoulder but clearly this was a bigger issue. I left the side lights on and after a minute I turned the key, instantly the lights on the dash when out and all the warning bulbs were flickering and dim. I left it another minute and this time the lights stayed on and it started first turn of the key. I put a new Bosch battery on it last month so I am reasonably certain that is OK, the diagnostics show no error codes and this morning it is running fine. Obviously there is an issue but any ideas guys? It is a 2002 1.9TDi, engine code AUY. Cheers Catherine
