I did consider it but im not keen on the idea of sending it off to then get a quote for repair, was rather hoping to get one from a scrap yard, Cant believe how hard this is to get. -

Hubby has got to change the cam belt on our Gal, the link is broken in the solutions sections, any pitfalls? any one know what tool we will need to lock the can Cheers

Had problems with gear linkage today 1st 3 and 5th selected ok but I had no 2nd 4th and reverse, I looked on here for some tips and looked at the gear stick end not sure if that was working right lol it was moving but it didnt feel right! and then started to dismantle battery cover and other stuff to see what was happening from above, initially the selector on the top of the gear box was not moving but you could see the linkage moving slightly, the lower one didnt appear to move anything but the linkage itself definatly moved further than the top one. I tried adjusting the linkage and really dont think I actually adjusted anytheng BUT the gears have come back now 2nd is hit and miss as to if it will go in going down the gears which I assume is down to adjustment. Does any one have any ideas as to what was actually wrong with this in the first place lol I prefer to see something broken and fix it

1998 TDI Galaxy, the belt tensioner is making a horrible noise it seems the tensioner has moved out of the housing towards the inner wing and is sitting on the belt about 1/3 of the width I have pushed it back it held for a couple of days noise was cured then its moved back out again. Any ideas how fix this?

This sounds to me as though the Boost Control Solenoid (N75) is causing your VNT mechanism not to work. When he mentions attenuator I assume he is talking about the VNT actuator which physically moves the vanes in the turbo which adjusts the amount of pressure. It is common for the VNT mechanism to stick and also the vacuum pipe to the VNT diaphagm to perish. Again like Insider suggested, you need to find out what engine is fitted to yours. Basically if it is the type fitted with the Variable vane turbo you're looking at -

The Registration doccument arrived back this morning lol that doesnt seem to be any help what so ever not sure if its right its states the engine no as starting VD and the number is the same as the rest of the vin number -
Bad Earth To Speedo? Where Do I Start

I thought it would be a sensor, especially as it does flicker on every now and again so its working to some extent, and hadnt even considered anything else it until my son came home after taking it for the diagnostics and the guy had told him its a faulty earth apparantly he has owned one himself that had that problem. I cant find any other topics about speedo problems. can any one direct me to it please. I agree but we do have fsh and all paperwork that looks genuine as far as we can tell up to July this year,when it was MOT'd and it must have been working then as the mileage is up since the mot. also the interior has no sign of any unusual wear.I know these things can happen we had some electrical component go on my sons rs2000 the day people travelled from Wales to look at it and the damed thing wouldnt start when they arrived -

Thankyou.......... I didnt realise the * was counted! and good news for me as that seems to be a lot cheaper for a turbo! now to get an insurance company that will recognise the right model lol wouldnt have had this problem if the entire log book is handed over to the new owner to send on. -
Bought my Gal last week 1998 1.9 tdi Ghia X (dont know if 90 or 110 )the speedo had just stopped working the day before we bought it, it flickers on every now and again,( registered 1.6 miles on approx 70 mile trip home) it went in for diagnostics yesterday and the guy took it for a test drive and has said its a bad earth and he also noticed the speedo flickered on when he indicated. we do also have one window thats not working on the passenger side rear door dont know if that is connected. can anyone please direct me as to where to start checking for this kind of fault

Just posting a follow up to the problem incase it may help some one else out she went for diagnostics yesterday and the 3000rpm problem is all down to the turbo boost pressure we need a new attenuator for the turbo and my turbo boost valve has been glued together with superglue I assume the owner that got rid of this to the person I bought this off got rid of it in a hurry because they also found the fault and were not prepared to spend money fixing a turbo and they guy i bought it off didnt even realise there was a problem! now the problem is not knowing which engine we have to actually get the parts as the turbos are different for the 90 and 110 BHP The starting problems well I have only had diesel vehicles for the last 18 years and I have NEVER EVER known any to be this difficult to start ( doesnt even fire until the battery is about to die totally) they tested the glow plugs and there is only one of them out cant believe that would make starting that hard. -

I have tried calling ford there only answer was the red bit on the badge, lol I am not sure I risk insuring my car on the strentgh of the col of the badge on the back especially as they are so asy to change. I have also checked on the insurance data base and that shows as a 90 on there but as Mum of 4 posted hers is also showing incorrect! The previous owner definatly said when he put in the reg no on line for insurance it instantly came up at 110 and that was the only proof he had found that it was 100 I have now found it needs a replacement part for the turbo to solve the running problems ( see my other post) and the turbos are different on the 90 and 110 We dont seem to have the engine no sticker my vin does have VD ( 11 and 12th digit) is the engine number anywhere else other than a sticker? -

Thanks for that after finding the post Charlie suggested I looked for the "W" ratings which should be either 60 or 80 W the only sticker i can find there said 95W shes at the garage for diagnostics at the minute so I cant get the numbers until it comes back IF i get it back I will post it later looked around in the dark and couldnt find the engine number had so much trouble starting it this morning after the frost didnt have time to look further before it went for the diagnostics. This is what is causing me the problems it was sold at a 110 and the previous owner told me he couldnt find anything to prove its a 110 but when hes done quotes online its told him its a 110 .....5 insurance quotes online are telling me its a 90 bhp so i dont know where he has been doing his! I have now had a quote from Tesco insurance which is the first company to list the 110 as being an option very strange though if its a 90 its more expensive than the 100! I would just like to thank every one who has tried to help its greatly appreciated -

It may well say on the registration doc but that has been sent off by previous owner and I need to get insurance cant really wait for it to come back before i sort the insurance out! I do assume though with the previous owner saying he hasnt seen anything to prove its a 110 its not actually on the log book. -
Bought my 98 R plate Ghia X on Saturday I was told by previous owner its supposed to be a 110 bhp but cant see anything any where to prove it and it doesnt drive different to his sons 90bhp but that is probably die to the running faults I have previously posted ( wont go over 3000 revs) I still havent been able to insure her, online as soon as I put in 98 or the reg no its coming up as a 90 bhp with no option to change it to a 110 my broker also is telling me its a 90 bhp now i have no problem paying for the insurance but I am sure if i had an accident further down the road they would decline to pay out. My Neighbour who has the same Galaxy remembers he had exactly the same problems but has had his for a few years now and cant remember how he found out! Parkers price guide list the only tdi Ghia x option for that year as being 110 bhp is there any way I can tell?

thanks for the help cant see anything obvious! My son is taking it into a garage where a mate works for diagnostics tomorrow and he seems to think he knows what the problem is and has ordered some parts ready to try so cross everthing I am not going to loose an arm or leg to get her right! -

Oh yes the bad starting is every time! it is exactly as the seller described it always seems like its not going to start she churns over and over is not firing at all then suddenly it will spring into life which always seems to be at the point when the battry sounds like its just about to give up trying! when started there is a dark cloud from back but nothing unusual for a diesel thats been turned over without starting, once running nothing unusual and its backed right up to a wall so would be very noticable. after the inital start she starts quite quick even if the engine is only slightly warm, when its really warm its literally as soon as the key is turned. we have had the maf off today " think" it might possibly get more revs but thats standing still on the drive without taking it on a run and that didnt make any difference to the starting when the engine was cold again. It always will go above the 3000 when standing still but refuses to go over it at all when being driven. With the Maf off it sounded really different like it had more life ( difficult to explain) Driving it we can only assume its pulling away ok etc bit hard to judge as this is our first one and the first Gal we have ever driven. There is a clear fuel pipe that runs accross the engine that goes into the diesel pump my Son noticed today it looks like every now and again air bubbles are travelling inside the pipe dont know if that could be anything! She runs lovely no rough running, no nasty noises the previous owner didnt seem to realise it should do any more than the 80 mph and didnt think it was or should drive any different to his sons 90 bhp tdi -

thanks for looking yes the speedo I mean the actual speed it flickers every now and again and the trip meter calculated a 70ish mile trip home as 1.6 miles so I assume this was counted suring the brief spells of it working its actually showing the total mileage all the time ok that doesnt flicker at all. on a cable speedo car this would be the same problem that you get when the cable is broken or has a very loose connection. -
Hi everyone I have just purchased (SATURDAY) this 1.9tdi Galaxy 1998 Ghia X, shes done 89000 miles with fsh to June this year I desperatly need help. The guy I bought this from has only had this 3 months he did not seem to know anything about cars at all and didnt set any alarm bells ringing at the time lol now I think they should have been bursting my ear drums! 1, the speedo isnt working I was told it had stopped just after he advertised it we all know these things happen and silly me thought it was a cable! it does flash on every now and again 70 miles home it managed to register a total of 1.6 miles 2,He did tell me that its very hard to start when cold " always seems like it is not going to start but always does" and he did say that it will not do a top speed of more than 80 mph I didnt realise that was out of the ordinary and thought the starting problems were down to needing new glow plugs. I drove her home lovely drive cant fault it runs really smooth BUT it is not going over 3000 rpm I have trawled through the tech section since saturday and I have found posts that seem to suggest this is in limp home mode would the gal pick up and drive as well as this if it is limp home? I think I have also found that the starting problems could also be connected to limp home any suggestions as to where to start please I am used to a diesel sireea with NO
