NAVMAN ICN 510

my new toy, its GREAT, i still don't understand some of it, but ive managed to get it to get me home from Newcastle, and its so accurate, just before my drive way, it said turn left (on to my driveway), and when i had done that, it said, 'destination' or something, very good, best

It was the most easiest thing ive EVER Installed, simply switch on!

the harder bit is learning how to operate/use it, but ime quickly learning the 'gist' of it,

overall VERY GOOD *FIVE STARS!*

I use TOM TOM on my Mitac Mio. The speed camera database is great and works really well. Just follow the install instructions to the letter and you should be ok. I wouldn't have thought you could break the existing setup, just that the POI works or it doesn't.

The database works brilliantly, especially if you use it with Checkpoint. It's not complete by any means as it relies on contributions from the public but it is still very comprehensive.

If your worried about breaking it, backup everything using Activesync or get hold of Sprite backup then it doesn't matter if it goes pear-shaped.

It's a little fiddly to install but once you've done it, you'll feel more confident doing the monthly updates.

On the NAVMAN website, there is a download page, which allows you to update your unit, when updates are available, i have already installed SP1 for my ICN510 NAVMAN NAVMAN website - downloads

There is also a technical help page, and phone numbers/e-mail - whatever you wanadoo.

My unit - note that the image/picture quality is far better than that shown in the demo.

Iv'e got a Dell Axim 3i PDA with TomTom and a Bluetooth GPS. Best bit of kit I have ever bought (from ebay).

I actually started off with a laptop with Destinator GPS but found the Laptop was just a pain .. too big and it landed on the floor a couple of times!

The Checkpoint speed camera stuff is brilliant. Most cameras are listed but if you "find" a new one you can add it to the POI's. One or two cameras are not exactly where Checkpoint thinks they are but again you can "move" them.

Setting up Checkpoint was indeed a bit fiddly but well worth it.

The PDA is great too. No more forgotten appointments and it is a great help in keeping track of my business paperwork / invoicing etc.

If you haven't got a built in GPS then get one of these !!

OK, ive been browsing http://www.pocketgps.co.uk/, and found somewhere on there that there are loads of databases of POI, the only problem is, there all in TOMTOM format, after 2 hours of searching, ive now got a 'converter' that will convert them into the correct format (.csv), i have had a go at converting the speed camera database (the TOMTOM Version) into the NAVMAN version, and it did it really well, the only difference is that it put " round the name " - will this affect it?

also, does anyone on here know, how do you get it to display what the speed limit is on the road you are on? as this would be extremely useful, when towing a caravan across country.

I'm running a Dell Axim X5 with a compact flash receiver and an extended battery with Tomtom 3 for complete wireless use for upto 10 hours. It is definately the best gadget I have bought. I have also downloaded the UK Postcode software so I can just type in a full UK postcode (Tomtom 3 only uses the first 4 digits, Tomtom 5 will use all 7) and it will navigate me there (useful if your destination only has a name and not a number).

Where did you download this? i think it would be useful if it works, as this navman, does not accept/need? the last two digits of the post code.

Unfortunately it's only for Tomtom and even that has now been pulled as the Ordnance Survey people threatened the author for using their copyrighted material, but this still available in various places on the net. It's a shame because it really is so simple, type in the postcode and hit "Navigate To" and it gets Tomtom to work out a route.

Do bear in mind that the more POI layers you have running, the slower the application will run, at least thats how it is with Tomtom, not sure about Navman though.
