Can't remember the right equation, but something to do with pressure=force/area. Smaller bore =less flow etc.

IMHO the cost of the right part is a fraction of the grief of replacing a blown heater matrix. :(

thanks for the replies.

was speaking to a vw technician (16 years experience) last night and he thought that it was probably there to protect the matrix.

it could be something to do with the hose coming off the main (19mm) hose to the throttle valve as it is a similar diameter to the restriction.

i will fit the correct part.

have been losing coolant ever since i bought the car 3 years ago. i thought i had found the problem when I blew a hole in the heater matrix recently. i bypassed it temporarily until i could find a spare 3 days.

I found that i was still losing coolant but car was running ok for the last 2 months until today, pulled up on the drive, got out, walking towards house when i heard a popping sound, turned around and steam was pouring from under the bonnet.

i can't see what the damage is until daylight - i suspect it is either the thermostat housing or a hose.

would bypassing the matrix cause increased pressure in the system?

i know this isn't following this thread, but.....

i've frantically been searching the forum to try to find information about a problem my galaxy has got. the gear changes are very harsh (mainly between 3rd and 4th, sometimes between 2nd and 3rd, but never / rarely in the other gears. This only happens when changing up from 3rd to 4th, not when going from from 4th to 3rd. It sounds like you had a very similar problem with yours some time ago. Did you ever get to the cause of the problem.

the gearbox oil has been checked, and refilled and was apparently quite clean. I've noticed from the history with mine that the gearbox was changed by fords about 18 months ago. through using Vag Com and TIS i'm beginning to think it could be an ecu problem . I got fault code 01166 - engine torque signal outside specifications - intermittent. TIS suggests this could mean the ecu needs recoding??? (however i cant find the codes / numbers i need to perform this with VAG COM) i assume vag com shareware can do this sort of thing? or should i be lookin at wiring / connections?

In light of the similar problems you had i thought you may be able to help. any help / advice would very much be appreciated.

p.s just in case the problem was the MAf i changed it anyway, but it made no difference,

sorry i can't be much help. i had my gearbox reconditioned 19 months ago - it is now out of warranty. i am still having the same problem with the gear change being harsh between 3rd and 4th.

i have learned to live with it as it is not every change. it mainly happens when you have slowed down from 4th to 3rd and then accerate again. it is the change from 3rd to 4th which is rough.

i couldn't find any further information on the 01166 fault code.

the auto box people conveniently could not find a problem during the 4 times that i took the car back. they said that it maybe an inherent problem - whatever that it supposed to mean.

can you let me know if you do solve the problem?

VR6 - vw are saying - that number is for a nut or bolt. can anyone post an ekta diagram of the coolant/heater hoses going into the matrix as the earlier diagram from strouf shows the hose that i blew but does not appear to show the 't' piece restrictor that i am looking for.

many thanks for your reply, i'm taking it to an auto box specialist next week - an independent recommended by frauds themselves. i dont suppose engine gearbox mounts would cause or enhance this problem?

thanks strouf. part 15 looks something like the part i need although my set up doesn't look exactly like the one in the diagram.

i was about to give up and use the 't' connector from the aquarium shop as vw didn't want to know when i told them it was a ford galaxy. ford are telling me that i need the whole assembly costing

that diag gives the same part numbers as you were given earlier in the post! it may be worth your while printing off the diagram and nailing it to the parts guys head, just to ensure he understands exactly what you want :)

picked up the part today. the restriction is only on one end of the 'T'.

before i fit it does anyone have any ideas why parts of the coolant system are failing? first the matrix blew and now a hose.

is it just that the system is fragile through age or have i got a blockage somewhere?

VW's are fairly well known for running high pressure in their coolant systems, they got caught out a few years back with the Mk2 Golf blowing heater matrix's  a combination of high pressure and a weak matrix led to a few court cases in the USA so a world wide recall/retro fit was done across the range to install a bypass valve, it did the job but is now known to fail in a way that you lost all heat as the valve shuts down the flow to the matrix! DOH

it could be that the restriction is due to this or that they want to equalise the flow to both heater units?

And I pick up mine on Friday :) the hose developed a pin prick hole in so I got a new one but in the process of replaceing the hose I found the tee peice was leaking! it had snapped right on the edge where the the spring clip holds onto it!

waatch the big pipe directly under the HT Box it can be expensive if that splits Edited by daz131

good luck. my 'T' piece just crumbled when i tried to disconnect the hose. i think i may have had a pin prick hole in the hose all along before bursting. it would explain why i have always been losing coolant but not able to find where as it would have evaporated immediately on the exhaust manifold.
