Can anyone tell me how to replace the water temp sensor - I have found it at the back of the engine but it is v.difficult to see; got my hand behind but cannot even get the electrical connector off.

Does the sensor simply pull out or is there some kind of clip keeping it in?

Thanks.

On my car the water temp sensor is at the front in the hose - just a clip holding wiring to it + a horseshoe type clip to remove then the sensor will just pull out of the hose ...

Not sure what you are looking at down the back of the engine ... maybe 1 of the experts on here will know?

I finally managed to replace the sensor this w/e - photo attached (I hope!) showing where it is - I had to use a mirror as the sensor is behind the head below the air pump on the right hand side of the engine. It is a sod to get to - had to remove the inter-cooler top hose and move the fuel filter to allow me to get my hand down behind, but still v.difficult.

Made sure I bought a new 'o'ring with it and all fitted back together fine.

Ran it around this afternoon and temp needle now works and high idle speed and revving when starting has gone - yippeee!

Oh - car was parked facing down hill on my drive and I still lost a fair bit of coolant when I took the sensor out - planned to replace the coolant anyway as it is now 6 years old , so this was not a loss but I wanted to see for interest how much would come out.

thanks for the picture - and confirmation that symptoms are now absent, how was the sensor fitted in ?? did it just pull out?

It is attached using a clip - you can see it beside the old sensor in the picture...if it is inserted from the top then it should be easy to pull out - if it is inserted from below then it is a sod as you have to get you hand round and underneath - I managed to use the blade of a screwdriver to lever the clip out. Once out, the sensor simply pulls out of the 'orifice' - it may leave the 'o' ring behind - suggest you use your finger to pull it out to ensure it is fitted correctly when putting back - simply push sensor home and fit clip back on. If clips fits then sensor is securely home and should be leak free! I left the wire connector on until I had the sensor out as it is easier then to remove it.

Hi All,

I have just had to replace the sensor on our PD engine, and discovered something that should save anyone about to do this some money.

My car was built in April 2001, and has auto aircon and an aux heater. According to both Ford AND VW dealers, it should be fitted with a blue coloured 2 pin sensor. Off I go and get a blue sensor. Remove old sensor and it is grey like in the picture in post #6. Oh well thinks I, it must be a new level. Rebuild and engine goes into hi rev mode on every start, and temp gauge doesn't go over 70

Update to my post ftom yesterday:

Just like in the fashion industry, Black is the new grey.

The reason Ford don't list a grey sensor, as it has been superceded by a new one which is black! The part which is available with the FINIS code 1459209, 6M21-10884-AA cross references to VW part 06A 919 501A, an upsuffix on the original part. (And it is

Grey seems to be back in fashion because that's the colour of the one I just bought from Ford. Black per their computer but mine came grey. Same codes as George's previous post.

my wife's alhambra, its temp gauge behaves irraticly.

often displaying 90 deg c when driving, while the oil shows approx 100 deg c.... then all of a sudden it drops back to < 50 deg c while the oil temp remains at 100 deg c.

so it the problem the sensor itself or the connection att he sensor or wiring loom.

I've order a new sensor, costing

i went at the wiring loom for the engine sensor around where the sensor is fitted to the engine on saturday, twiddled & re positioned it.

since the weekend its been working perfectly .... here's to hoping.

BTW the auto fators couldn't get a new sensor for me.

BTW: here are the car's error codes.

Me too Alhambra, refitting the retaining clip is nigh on impossible from below (which is where it was fitted origanally) so it was refitted from above. I had problems getting the new sensor as I was assured that all cars post 99 have got a green 4 pin unit, so thats what i got, and on stripping it out it turns out to be a grey 2 pin unit and as it was Saturday afternoon when I was attempting the job I had to refit the old one. Be careful not to dislodge the vacuum pipe for the brake servo assist or you will have no brakes when you put everything back together and you will have to take it all apart again to fix it........DOH!! This job is not for the feint hearted and as other people have posted it is a Pig of a job. My car is running fine at the moment with the old sensor refitted but as the fault (over revving on start up) was intermittent heres hoping it will be ok as I don't fancy doing it all again.

I'm very pleased to report that its been 2 days since i fitted the new BLACK sensor.

I cleared the temp sensor error after replacing it & so far the engine ecu is still error free.

my wife reports that the 'mad revving' upon start up has not occured since the sensor was fitted.

I'm flabergasted to think that a sensor can go internittently bad in the way that the old grey sensor did ... goes against all my electronic understanding.

Fingers crossed, i won;t consider the car to be in good health until a week or more has passed
