Guest BagPuss Posted November 22, 2006 Report Posted November 22, 2006 Then again, There is one legit free place but how 'in date' they are I don't know. I get some POI's from there and they are listed...So basically free. POI Place Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 Paul ..have a look at this link http://reviews.cnet.com/Navman_F20/4505-3430_7-32125020.html On that review site, the Navman gets the same score as the tomtom one, but slightly better reviews from users (although not as many user reviews written, and they are American ) Given the amount that I'll be using it, and the fact that it can be bought for a decent amount less than the One, I think I'll go for this over tomtom. I originally got satnav as we were moving to a new area and didnt know anywhere so I used it on every trip. Now been here for 18 months and only use it for going places never before visited, hence much less use but still needed. I wouldn't use most of the more advanced features on the higher model tomtoms so see that as a bit of a waste of money. As the reviews say, it's a good basic, no-nonsense, get you there properly satnav unit, which is what I'm after (and the lower price will keep the Mrs happier!). If it turns out to be sh1t, I'll accept any amount of told you sos you want to throw my way  Thanks for all the advice, as always, much apreciated. :( Quote
JohnR Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 tried using them last year but the overlay info for cams was sure dodgy - actually had a traffic camera (gatso) marked which would have been visible from our landing window - guess what - no camera, never had been (road had only been open 2 years). Stuck to Pocketgpsworld camera database - seems quite good I know what you mean about the pubs......I tried a different route to work this morning, and the 3 pubs that were marked were all 100-200 yards out of position! All the local speedcams and red-light cams are spot on though. I haven't found any missing ones yet. Quote
Smilge Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 Gents ...why are you paying for the camera updates? I use this site: http://www.poiedit.com/ doesnt cost me a thing and is obtianed from the PocketGPSWorld database Quote

I use this site: http://www.poiedit.com/ doesnt cost me a thing and is obtianed from the PocketGPSWorld database based on the last free database available - but not updated Mio 269 is not directly supported by poiedit, so needs a file conversion and messing about. With POI-warner using POI-handler.com it is supported so is a fully automated sync. Just plug in load the app and push the button! If you charge via a USB cradle its so easy you can push the button everyday just to make sure! Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 23, 2006 Report Posted November 23, 2006 takes all of 60 seconds on the 910  Quote

I use this site: http://www.poiedit.com/ doesnt cost me a thing and is obtianed from the PocketGPSWorld database based on the last free database available - but not updated Well thats strange because I download updates usually once a week. :) I've done that but when I ran a check the cameras are not in the same place - this may have changed the crosschecking was exhaustive but done a while ago now I'm not sure if we are talking about the same place/site I am registered with poisync/poihandler (uses a different database) rather than poiedit which is the editting program-linkon this site takes you elsewhere). I know that when pocketgpsworld database changed to the pay model theywent to great lengths pursuing illegal copies of the updated database esp on ebay - they have a way of identifying te source of leaked/copied files which I guess is built into the minor digit positions of certain cameras - a guess since the discussions in the member fora obviously restricted how the information was unique. btw the autoupdate in poiedit does not use the pocketgpswoorld database (or couldn't up to a couple of months ago since I last checked) the autoupdate from pocketgpsworld hasn't worked since the pay database was implemented :) which is irritating) Quote
raymac Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 we havnt got that exact model, but weve got a navman ICE520 (IIRC) sometimes it takes ages and ages to get a signal. MJR Matt have the same as you icn520 being the model number , bought it 6mths ago from halfords for Quote
Guest gooner52 Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 we had a problem with gps signal on our old tomtom 3 took ages to pick up the sats.. then one day we turned the panasonic head unit off and it worked fine for some reason it was blocking the gps signal :D Quote
Guest Cepheus Posted November 24, 2006 Report Posted November 24, 2006 Picked up the F20 today and all I can say is wow! Picks up a fix inside the house in less than 20 seconds, in the car its an almost instant fix. Prefer the mapping on this to that on tomtom5, especially the way it handles roundabouts. I was forever taking the wrong exit on tomtom due to the lag it had navigating you round the roundabout. The navman zooms out at roundabouts automatically so you can see exactly which exit you need to take. Took it out of the box and had it set up in less than 2 minutes. I was expecting me to pick fault with it as I've used tomtom for a few years now, but am pleasantly surprised with the overall useability of it. Would definately recommend it as a cheap, basic, get me to where I want to go SatNav solution. Preloaded speed cameras work a treat, but don't seem to include redlight cameras. Will have to look at updating the database to include them. Managed to get it for Quote
