Guest Matt17c Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Hi there, I have been cribbing from this site for a while and its been a great help, though this is my first post. I have searched far and wide, but cannot find a specific reference to the simple task of checking and topping up the automatic gearbox oil in a 1.9 TDi engine. I have found all manner of help on this for those with a V6, but it doesn't seem to relate to my box (I realise a deisel auto is unusual!). Also, I can see no obvious level or topping up holes on the gearboc itself. So that's it - how do I check the auto gearbox oil level on a TDi? Matt Quote
bigdaddy Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Look in the FAQ section its listed in there,,,,, Quote
Guest Matt17c Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Thanks BigD, so I get the jist that there are 2 bolts on the bottom and one is for checking the level. But which one? Quote
NikpV Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Thanks BigD, so I get the jist that there are 2 bolts on the bottom and one is for checking the level. But which one? some pictures here Quote
Guest Matt17c Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Thanks for the reply NikpV. The pictures on that thread were very good. However, none were anything like the underside of my Galaxy! Its a 2001 TDi auto, but everything that I have found on the net (and boy have I been looking!) has given instructions and provided pictures for a model other than mine. If anyone knows anything more about my version of the gearbox, I'd love to hear from you. Oh, and now the wife has brought the car back, there is in fact only one bolt on the bottom of the gearbox, which looks rather like the drain plug. Many thanks, Matt Quote
Guest 3.5bullet Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 does your gearbox look like this? you can see in the first picture the approximate location of the dual purpose level check and drain plug, also in this picture you can just make out the filler tube with the red cap on it, if this is like yours then i have another couple of pictures shown the sump removed from the gearbox which show the exact location of the level check and drain plug Quote
NikpV Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 how about this one - indicated plug is the level check? Quote
Guest Matt17c Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Excellent! The last picture is the right one for me. Off to the garage right now, will report findings. Quote
Guest Matt17c Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 Results were just fine - oil leaking out proves the box isn't short of oil. The oild was cleanish, smooth and runny. One item crossed off the list. Thanks for the pictures. However, the successful resolution of this issue leaves my plan for solving my original problem in tatters! The problem is twofold: 1. Occassionally when in top gear and going uphill the engine lags and the gearbox seems unwilling to change down. This results in a lot of juddering (almost a stall) before I have to kick-down to get the gear to change. 2. When in the overrun (decelerating on the engine (no brakes)) there is a noise which I can only describe as like a dog growling when you first lift the accelerator pedal and for about 5-10 seconds thereafter. I can't tell whether its coming from the engine, gearbox or exhaust system because I can't reproduce the noise while stationary. Any top tips would be welcomed. Matt Quote
NikpV Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 going uphill the engine lags umm - when mine started doing this and the gearbox would not change down it was the MAF - don't know about droning noise though - come to think of it I still get one but only when SWMBO is in the car   :P the maf doesn't always completely fail see this thread Ps was it the last diagram or the photos Quote
Guest Matt17c Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 It was the last diagram, thanks. I'll try out the trick with the MAF thingy tomorrow. If I understand it correctly, by disconnecting the MAF, I should notice a significant drop in performance. If I don't then the MAF is bust. But if I do, then it doesn't necessarily mean the MAF is perfect... Quote
NikpV Posted June 2, 2006 Report Posted June 2, 2006 got it  It was the last diagram good thats the same as mine then  :P Quote
wicpp Posted July 14, 2009 Report Posted July 14, 2009 I need to ask a very simple questions the gearbox oil of Diesel Autmatic ford galaxy is more thick or viscous than its engine oil? Quote
