With petrol consumtion/prices doing my head in and the impending swap to a Picasso diesel [that will do 3 times as many to the gallon as mine] coming, father in law suggested getting a diesel engine and swapping it for my gas guzzler.

Is this feasible / practical / economical I ask?

Cheers.

I think youd have to get a new tranny too

you can get the combo engine + tranny for about 600-800,

getting someone to fit them will be the problem.

Here in Luton, where there are mechanics aplenty, you could prolly get it done for

You would need the engine, loom, dash, gearbox, radiator, front exhaust up to and including the cat, any relevant air con bits, throttle pedal etc.

Possible? Yes. Practical? Well I have to agree with the post above that if you had a heavy rear-ended diesel then quite possibly if your determined enough.

More realistic to use all that positive energy and enthusiasm to get a promotion/new job with a pay rise to cover the fuel costs!
