Hi there

I'm a galaxy newbie and am suffering probs i think with the 98R 2.3si galaxy I purchased three months ago. I say i think I'm having problems however I can't be sure if this problem is just a characteristic of the 2.3 derivative.

I'm noticing at low revs and on an uphill during accleration the engine becomes 'thumpy'. It is particularly noticeable on a hill start forward and i think more so in reverse (I assume this is torque related). I have recently put it through its 90k mile service and have found ford Reading to be less that helpful. I wonder if anyone can throw some light on this possible problem as I would like to go to Ford with some ideas that I can throw at their mechs. rather than be fobbed off.

I have a fear that it may be bearing related however I am told that bearing wear is evident throughout the rev range. I have also been pointed to timing issues by a friend however the plugs /leads have been replaced within the last 16 months.

I must point out that the noise is not a secondary noise but a change in the combustion sound. Also noticeable is the feel of the thump through the clutch when biting.

Apologies if this sounds a bit vague but I would really appreciate any advice. We desperately need to get this sorted soon as the dodgy dealer who sold this to us is trying to deny any problem and having just been blessed with our second set of twins  we can't afford any major repairs for a while.

Thanks

Phil

With the engine running and the bonnet up get someone to rev the the engine while you watch it, if it moves back and forth rather violently, then there's your problem! the lower engine mount (roll restrictor) has gone! which isnt as bad as it sounds  it could just be the bolt broke where it mounts onto the gearbox, with a set of ramps and a few tools its an easy enough job! if it is the lower mount be carefull as the extra movement of the engine can cause one of the AC pipes to fracture and cause even more problems is you run the AC system when its dry!

Hi all

The same thing happened to mine a couple of months back. If it is the same thing as FredT has described the part is about

and takes about 5 mins to replace..............

I wish! it took me a bit longer as I could'nt get my Galaxy on the ramps! due to it being so low  I ended up having to jack the car up and slide the ramps under it so I could gain access to the lower mount, although after the fun of lifting it it did only a few minutes to replace the broken bolt :P

...ok i'll re-phrase that!

It took me about an hour of yanking and swearing with an ill fitting set of spanners before giving up. It then took my trusty local mechanic less than five minutes to replace with his drive on ramps and Snap On spanners!!!!!!!!!
