James Atkin Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Hi all, I have a Ford Galaxy, 1997, 2.3 petrol whose airbag light has decided to light itself up! This occurred after the car had gone in for it's MOT (it wasn't on before it went in, and was when it came out!!!)They have tried to take a look, but claim that their software is having trouble communicating with the ECU! There is a lot of mention regarding the clock spring behind the wheel being a common fault, but as (apparently) the garage touched nothing but a suspension arm (ummm) it looks like it has been falsely triggered (maybe) I have taken a look around for a PC based interface and seen loads, ranging from Quote
28vr6 Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 James, are you wishing to connect to the ECU with Vag-Com to try and sort your air bag light, if so be warned that the boys at Ross-Tech advise that some airbags with certain part numbers should not be interrogated as they may work as advertised. http://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/vw_issues.html should give you the advice for all your ideas HTH  Quote
burky 4x4 Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Just had my clockspring replaced on 99 2.8 V6 as airbag light was permanently on and system disabled as a result. C/spring Part costs about Quote
James Atkin Posted May 17, 2007 Author Report Posted May 17, 2007 Thanks for the replies... It does sound more and more like the clock spring sensor might well have gone. The fact that it was triggered during the MOT was coincedental - at least that is what the garage will say ;-) If this is the case, when replaced, will the light be turned off, or will it still require resetting? Thanks, James Quote
Bigjeeze Posted May 17, 2007 Report Posted May 17, 2007 When I changed mine on my '97 Mk1 it did not need resetting. So go ahead and try it - if it does then maybe someone with VAG Com can help. Regards BJ Quote
James Atkin Posted May 21, 2007 Author Report Posted May 21, 2007 I'll be taking a trip to the local Ford Spares shortly... I'll let you know what happens :D James Quote
James Atkin Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 Hi all, Sorry it's been so long since I started looking at this - kind of been on hold for a while!!! Anyway, finally got around to going to the Ford dealers and was told that they weren't sure which part contained the Clock Spring!!!! Good to know they know their stuff!!!! Does anyone happen to know the part number of the assembly I need??? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks James Quote
James Atkin Posted February 4, 2008 Author Report Posted February 4, 2008 One last thing... When I finally get my hands on the offending article, where it states to use molybdenum disulphide grease, is the Comma CV & Lith-Moly Grease 500G sold at Halfords or similar ok to use? Cheers, James Quote
James Atkin Posted February 11, 2008 Author Report Posted February 11, 2008 Hi all, Ok, finally got it all done... All went fine ... got it all reassembed and powered her up...Damn light is still there!!!!!!!!! I guess (hope) the warning needs to be reset... Don't suppose anyone knows how to reset it without the need to go to a Fraud garage??? James Quote
Wibbly Posted April 9, 2008 Report Posted April 9, 2008 Just had my clockspring replaced on 99 2.8 V6 as airbag light was permanently on and system disabled as a result. C/spring Part costs about Quote
pkc Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 I don't know of any other options, but it is not a MOT fail, as mine passed a month ago with the warning light on. Looks like I'll be trying the clock spring first... Quote
Wibbly Posted April 10, 2008 Report Posted April 10, 2008 Anyone know if a broken clock spring can give the same symtoms as a broken airbag (detonator)? The dealer just bunged it through their 'diag' system, which said airbag was the problem.... Quote
