My Galaxy's Digital Clock's backlight has gone out and I've been told that this can only be rectified by replacing the clock. Surely this cannot be true! If i can rectify this without such drastic action how do I do it and how do I remove the clock from the housing. I've tried to remove thclock using a screwdriver but it doesn't seem to want to come free and I son't want to cause damage.

Pretty sure that we've covered this one before. Bulb can be replaced in isolation. Try a search - sorry no time to look for you this evening as I'm going out soon.

The bulb is a seperate item and is replaceable  you will need to remove the clock, carefully prise it out of the overhead console! then use a pair of thin nose pliers to remove the bulb by twisting it anti clockwise. the bulb can got from any good motor factors

step 2: you can remove the connector by squeezing the tabs and pulling

Step 3: Use screwdriver or long nose pliers (depends on bulb fitted) to twist bulb anti clockwise quarter turn to release.

The bulb is a 1.2W 12V PCB mount bulb - if you pay more than 90p you're being ripped off - the bases come in a variety of colours blue/black/orange - any will do.

Farnell part no is 141-355

Installation is the reverse of removal <_<

I had no light in my clock for over a year - I thought it never had one then you think "of course it should have" ..... found the answer on this site ! Changed the light bulb and yessssss !! I love this site

One question if anyone knows the answer or has come across the same problem - the bulb can go in either way it appears and lights up which ever way it goes in and is on all the time. I assumed it was on permanently for day time running and dimmed for night time when you switched on the headlamps etc - it certainly 'flicks over when you turn the lamps on but I cannot see any difference ?

Is there a difference ? Does it matter ?

Thanx

No, it doesnt matter which way round the bulb goes.

Yes its on permanently (with the ignition on or lights on) and yes it dims (slightly) when you turn on the headlights. I suppose it would be too bright if it didn't dim.

Did you know if you wear polarised sunglasses :o , the digital clock becomes invisible from the drivers position (it turns black)?

Thanks for that Seatkid, I had assumed that was the case but I cannot work out if it dims or not ? Ones of lifes little mysteries  .... at least I can see the time now without having to turn on the interior light ....

Off to buy some polarised sunglasses :o

Mine's out too. However I've taken the clock out recently (which is a bit fiddlely but ok if your not too rough with it). You can clearly see a bulb in the circuit board which un-plugs. It doesn't look like a paticularly standard bukb but definately a replacement part. I had the garage do one on my previous lease car galaxy so can confirm the're available. We should now both yet round to doing it ourselves shouldn't we?

I was very much under the impression that the colour of the base denoted the brightness of the bulb.

Anyway it's safer to replace the same coloured base with the same coloured base.

You can get the spares from any VW / Audi dealer.

Have replaced several bulbs on the back of the dashboard of my Audi 80 over the years - most were orange based, but several indicator bulbs had different coloured bases.

Partly correct... The colour denotes the rated life of the bulb - IIRC orange is 5000 hr rated as opposed to blue 1000 hr. Orange ones are slightly dimmer because they are underun.

If you want to pay four times as much as at a Delphi distributor (or six times as much other places)

Thats not quite correct, the colour denotes the wattage and the Voltage, if you put a 24v lamp in a 12 volt system, the lamp will be dimmer(and of course last longer)

Another problem could be that people are buying AC bulbs instead of DC ones...that can make a difference into the life of the bulb.....

Thats quite funny, at first I thought you were being serious!!

This is getting stoopid! Read my lips.....

The colour of the base denotes the rated life. (There is a tradeoff between life and brightness)

There is no such thing as a filament bulb that is "AC" opposed to "DC".

I thought you were joking for a min,

as I said in my last post, the colurs denote the wattage and the voltage

I cannot tell you all the ratings, but Light green is 12V 2Watts (as I have two here)

I was sold some, and they were very dim,and turned out to be 24 Volt lamps.

Hi,

I've had my 2000 (W) Galaxy 19.TDi for over 3 months now, and I love it (Mk1)

I have the same problem as on the original post - in fact, the clock has never illuminated; however, I have replaced the bulb and it still no longer works - with or without the lights on. I've checked the bulb and it's good.

If someone can answer the following, I'd be grateful:

1. What is the correct behaviour: clock only illuminates when lights are on, or all the time?

2. Any idea what each pin in the connector does? If the answer to q1 (above) is it "only works with the lights switched on", then I'm assuming I should see a voltage on one of the connector pins when I turn the lights on - question is, which pin? Pins are labelled as follows:

KL15

KL30

KL31

KL58b

3. Should I just get a new clock?

Clock itself works fine - but now I know it should illuminate, it's bugging me....

thanks all,

Phillip

The grey/blue wire going to pin no. 4 should provide the illumination. ;) Andy.

Cheers Andy - the bulb's good and there's juice going through the wire when the lights are on (and not when the lights are out) so I diagnose a faulty clock.

eBay here I come...... :)

Well ive learnt something on this topic and i am going to sort it tomorrow. First of all don't trust the haynes book for instructions on changing the bulb. They tell you to prise out the clock but don't tell you what part to prise out. Consequently I manged to unclip the whole unit including the mounting plate from the roof lining. I managed, to change the bulb but could'nt figure out how i was supposed to reconnect the unit without taking down the roof lining. Well i'll tell you I weren't gonna do that so i just wedged it back with some card. I now know how to go about putting it back properly. Thanks guys!!
