my new gal had the dredded stuck cabel for the spare wheel, so back to the dealer for a new one and they let me keep the old one. now i was going to take it apart to see how it has gone wrong. is it a matter of removing all the rivets or just some of them? and can they be replaced by bolts? if i do this job i will photo each step for further use.

Yes you need to drill out the rivets and replace them with bolts. I did this on mine - My cable was so twisted up it had to be ditched. All I did then was to replace the bolt at the bottom end after drilling a 1/2 in deep hole to matcht eh cable (I bought from B&Q) then brazed it in place top & bottom - greased it and put it back together using bolts - and it has so far survived around 4 years.

ok, i have removed the rivets but i used a sanding disc on a grinder on the rivet bottom side, then parted the two parts with a hammer and chisel. i have taken the cabel mech apart to undo the snag and may need to replace the cabel as it has a couple of broken strands. more to follow.

ok job completed and carrier back on the car. i did end up drilling the rivet heads out and i had a friend silver solder the ends back onto the new cabel. home base still sell the cabel in the home security dept. at 99p its a steal.

any questions at the back?

Well done mate,

Plenty of information and photos, that's just what we need on this site.

If there is a way of saving money (99p cable from B&Q ) and a handful of bolts,I'm all for it.

The money is better in our pocket than in Frauds.

Let's see more like this and less about head lice and go faster stripes. :)

Hi Guys, am a bit of a newbie here but have had problems with the spare wheel not staying tight in position so I stripped the unit (actually quite easy as someone had already drilled out the rivets and replaced them with screws) unfortunately the plastic gear wheel inside is missing a tooth!

My question is does anyone know who manufactures this unit and if it is possible to get spares?

If not do any of you guys have a spare pulley or a winch that is no longer serviceable that I can remove the pulley from?

Finally I tried looking at the pictures posted for this operation but despite being logged in I get an error message saying I am not authorised

You will be able to view the pictures once you have several more posts....seee Trainee Member Help section....guidelines..

These units are usually available at scrapyards or ebay....have a look.

The units are still available from ford/seat/VW but you don't want to know there prices..

i though mine out knocked up a long bolt arrangement..works great, rubbish design..

Hi marcostig, tell us more about your long bolt arrangement. I leaning towards an alternative solution as I don;t like the replacement cable option. One becuase it could happen again and two because i feel it is unsafe.

Been having a problem with my spare coming down. I won't bother you all with the reasons behind by needing it off, but I've been looking at various threads for a couple of wks now and finally decided to have another go this morning. FWIW, the current price of a new carrier from Fraud Marlow is about
